I bet you have one or two things you do that don’t further your best interests. I know I do. For example, that 20 minutes I spend every morning catching up with my Facebook friends. It’s a compulsion, I guess, and even though I know could use the time more productively, I haven’t been able to get myself to stop doing it. But this week, to celebrate Chapter One of the new book I co-wrote with Ian – 101 Ideas to Kick Your Ass Into Gear – I am going to Quit Screwing Around First Thing in the Morning and Work on Clarifying My Mission!
I’m going to rat out my friends for a minute. Just off the top of my head, I can think of the following things that friends of mine do that probably don’t help them achieve their aims (and some of these folks are very successful people). I have a friend who undervalues himself. I have a friend who expresses her insecurities by criticizing others. I have a friend who drinks too much, too often. I have a friend who lets fear of failure prevent him from doing anything remotely ambitious. I have a friend who is oblivious to the feelings of others when she loses her temper.
The truth is, most of us have several things we do that keep us from being as awesome as we are capable of being. And most of those things are minor, like not checking every day to make sure our work is leading us closer to our goals. If we were to quit that one thing, we might stop stagnating and start moving in the direction of our dreams.
Is there one thing you could quit today that would help you succeed?
